Tariff, tariff, tariff!

Posted in In The News

Tariff, tariff, tariff… are you as tired as I am of hearing about them? It feels like they’re everywhere—on the news, all over social media, and in just about every conversation. It's like this constant, nagging presence.

After what felt like months of anticipation, we just wrapped up a provincial election. And now, with the Liberal leadership decided, it seems like we’re gearing up for a federal election too. It all just feels overwhelming, doesn't it? And honestly, kind of scary. It’s easy to feel like everything is just spinning beyond our control.

Sure, I get to vote—something I absolutely don't take for granted. Yes, I can make decisions on how I shop, considering tariffs and taxes. But still, it all feels so distant. The news coverage, the constant updates—it's like a never-ending loop of bad news getting worse.
As much as I’d love to make a change on the national stage or influence what’s happening in the U.S., the reality is that, as one person, I can’t. I can’t control the election outcomes or the policies that come from them. And it can be easy to feel helpless. But instead of letting that feeling overwhelm me, I’m reminded of what I can control. What’s local. What’s right here, in my hands.

In a world that often feels chaotic, it's comforting to know that here in Waterloo Region, we have a history of coming together. Our strong business community, supported by two incredible Chambers of Commerce, and our passionate leaders who genuinely care about the well-being of our community, show us that collaboration makes us stronger. As we continue to focus on what we can directly impact, let's remember that by uniting, we've always found ways to thrive, and together, we will continue to create a brighter, more connected future.
Even in my area of focus, housing, we’re seeing some of the most innovative and impactful changes happen right here. Take Kitchener and Waterloo, for example. Both cities have made housing a priority and are working with us on the BUILD NOW projects. This initiative is a fresh, innovative approach to housing that shows real progress in the face of uncertainty. These cities are taking action, not just standing still.

Kitchener has pledged land in Stanley Park, and Waterloo has set aside space near RIM Park. Together, these projects will bring 1,100 new affordable and attainable homes to the region. And all of this is happening during one of the most turbulent times we’ve seen in years.
It’s easy to feel discouraged by everything going on in the wider world, but seeing what’s happening right here in our own backyard gives me hope. In a time when the future feels uncertain, it’s the local action that’s inspiring me.
We can’t control what’s going on in the U.S. or predict the outcome of the upcoming federal election. So many things are beyond our reach. But here, at home, we do have the power to shape our own future. And that future? It’s looking bright.
