Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region and BUILD NOW: Waterloo Region Announce Exciting New Development Proposal to Waterloo City Council
Waterloo, ON – November 28th, 2024 – Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region as the leader of the BUILD NOW: Waterloo Region initiative is excited about the opportunity to negotiate with the City of Waterloo on a transformative affordable and attainable ownership housing project. This ambitious project aims to address the critical need for affordable and attainable ownership housing in the region by providing over 1,000 stable, and attainable homes.
“Our proposed plan reflects what is quintessentially Waterloo Region. When given a problem to solve, folks with different backgrounds and perspectives come together to solve it.” said Philip Mills, CEO of Habitat Waterloo Region “Our plan is a strong example of community coming together for the betterment of the region, with a big focus on collaboration. By working together, we can create a lasting model for affordable and attainable ownership housing that benefits generations to come.”
In 2023, the BUILD NOW: Waterloo Region initiative committed to constructing 10,000 units of “missing middle” housing. A potential partnership with the City of Waterloo marks a significant step toward this ambitious goal. The land for the project is located at 2025 University Ave E, Waterloo, a highly accessible site that will play a key role in the region's growth and development.
“We are excited about the opportunity to secure an agreement with the City of Waterloo to move this important development forward,” added Mills. “This is a key moment to demonstrate the power of collaboration in addressing the affordable housing crisis, and we are hopeful that we can finalize an agreement that will meet the city’s objectives for affordable and attainable ownership housing, and unlock the potential of this site.”
Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region and the BUILD NOW: Waterloo Region initiative are grateful to the more than 30 dedicated partners, including 10 not-for-profit organizations, whose collaborative efforts, expertise, and shared commitment have been instrumental in bringing this submission to life. These remarkable partnerships highlight the power of community working together toward a common goal.
The proposed development is a crucial step toward fulfilling the region's need for attainable housing, and Habitat Waterloo Region and the BUILD NOW initiative are eager to work with the City of Waterloo to bring this vision to life.
