Founded in 1988, Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a decent and affordable place to call home. We work to bring our community together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. With the help of volunteers, donors and community partners, we provide a solid foundation for low-income families in Waterloo Region.
Role Description

120 Northfield Drive, Waterloo – ReStore
200 Preston Parkway, Cambridge - ReStore
Hours
4 or 8 hour shifts – During ReStore Hours
Time Commitment
Volunteer for 1-2 shifts. After this time, a commitment of 10 shifts over 3 months is required.

Purpose
To carry out the stated mission of Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region. Cashiers are primarily responsible for providing front-of-house customer service and for processing purchases.
Reports to
ReStore and Volunteer Services staff
Responsibilities
- Greet customers as they enter the ReStore
- Direct customers to specific departments within the ReStore
- Answer customer questions with assistance from staff
- Process cash, credit card, and debit sales
- Answer the telephone and receiving door chime
- Price products, with direction from staff
- Maintain store standards and conditions by cleaning and organizing
- Ensure safety at all times
- Assist on the floor when needed
- Be alert to possible shoplifting
Qualifications and/or Skills
- Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity philosophy and the desire to promote it
- Ability to work with a team or independently
- Friendly and engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds
- Experience using electronic cash systems an asset
- Some knowledge of building materials is an asset
- Healthy balance of patience and energy required
- Ability to work quickly and accurately when there are multiple tasks happening at once
- Understands confidentiality and uses discretion of customer information
- Willingness to learn
- Must be punctual
- Must be at least 18 years of age
Orientation and Training
- Habitat Waterloo Region Volunteer Orientation and Safety Training
- Completion of a ReStore safety quiz
- General ReStore Associate training
- Cashier specific training with a ReStore member
- AODA certificate completion (required topics for the Customer Service Standard Training)
Working Conditions
- Dry, dusty warehouse
- Cool/hot temperature dependent on time of year
- Some outdoor work
Screening Process
- Two 4-hour shifts of ReStore Associate volunteering prior to being accepted for the position
- A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check is required
